You guys like stuff, right?

My friend [livejournal.com profile] enerjak is selling some of her massive collection of geeky, gamer, and otaku merchandise, and oh man, are there ever some righteous deals going on here. Check out this post for clothing, this one for merchandise including a ton of rare and collectible merch, and this one for a boatload of Emily the Strange stuff.

And my friend [livejournal.com profile] ladysisyphus, who makes beautiful sparkles and jewelery, has also put up masterlists for her immense portfolio of sparklies. Check out her posts for simple earrings, glam as fuck earrings, pendant necklaces, devotional jewelery, beaded bracelets, and memory wire bracelets and cuffs.

I can personally vouch for the reliability of both, and your cash is in good hands. Support artisans and fellow fen this Christmas season!

Along those lines, I will be having a print sale soon! Keep your eyes tuned to this channel for cheaaaaaaaap cheeaaap cheaaaaaap prints of my art, iffen that's the kind of thing that makes you happy. :)

On a happier note, I have things in my tabs! Consume them!

The Art of Nickie: Nickie is a bara illustrator, which means he draws big, thick, beefy guys with nice fat cocks a lot. And boy, does he ever do it well. And he lives in my city, how cool is that!!

Lost & Taken is my new favorite resource for free textures. They are so, so beautiful. My favorite is the Watercolour Textures.

Dead End Thrills takes screenshots from video games and, through various cheats, filters, and effects, turns them into stunning, high-res widescreen wallpapers. All of them are gorgeous, especially this GTA and Mass Efffect ones. He even offers print-sized resolutions to turn them into wall art! What a man!

Shamelessly recommending something I picked up today, the Mighty Wallet.

As you can see from the video, this wallet is basically nothing short of miraculous. It's made of a single folded sheet of recycled plastic fibres (tm Tyvek) with no stitching or glue, it cannot be torn or ripped apart despite looking and feeling like paper, it resists water, and stretches to accommodate a huge load of cards and cash. It is the lightest, slimmest wallet I have ever owned, comparable to the handmade packing-tape-and-cue-cards wallet I just retired. And with its unusual designs, it is theft-resistant as well -- some wallets are printed to look like air mail envelopes or maps.

I saw the video a little while ago and put it in the back of my memory, but with my handmade wallet finally throwing in the towel on the good fight, I was on the search for a new one. All the wallets I tried were too heavy and bulky for me, as I carry mine in my back pocket all the time. I found my Mighty Wallet today at Chapters and I have never in my life decided to buy something so fast. I didn't even look at the price tag until it was rung in -- luckily it was only $15. :D

Anyway, this this is absolutely amazing and everyone should have one. Mine's printed to look like a piece of notebook paper, and it is delightfully subversive, but there's tons of cool designs, including a map of New York. It was a very tough decision, okay.

i watched a lot of things today

Today, [livejournal.com profile] hungerpunch linked this gif from J'ai tué ma mère and I was intrigued, so I looked it up. What can I say, I am interested in paint-spattered boys having sex.

So, anyway, I found this, which is the full scene the gif is from, and I was like, huh, one of those guys looks really familiar, HOLY CRAP THATS CESARE FROM THE BORGIAS.

FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, AS IF I NEEDED MORE REASONS TO SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST AT FRANCOIS ARNAUD.

And that is why you should be watching The Borgias, hnngh.

I also started watching the West Wing, and was so excited that Lisa Edelstein (Cuddy, from House) is in it that I couldn't focus on rest of everything else that was going on. I kept being angry that they were focusing on things which were not hooker!Cuddy.

Today I also watched Whip It, and I was thinking about how there are plenty of fics where Arthur is secretly Neil (Mysterious Skin) or Tom (500 Days of Summer) or Eames is Handsome Bob (Rocknrolla), but there are none where Ariadne is Bliss (Whip It) or Juno (...Juno.). Is that because people don't like Ariadne? Because less people write female characters? Because it's so hard to write Ariadne because we learn precisely nothing about her character except that she has an inquisitive nature and a prized skill, very fitting for an audience surrogate?

AND THEN I also watched the first episode of Buffy, which was playing on Much More Music (remember when music stations played music?). I never watched Buffy when I was a kid... and I was a kid at the time; we went through our awkward, gangly youth phase at about the same time, seeing as I was a Girl Guide when it came out. I remember my friends comparing me to Willow, and man, after seeing Willow in the first season, makes me realize my friends were kind of dicks. I watched episodes when I caught them, particularly the Spike ones, because, again, by that time we were into my sexual crisis years, and we didn't have Twilight back then. Long story short, oh my god, what were the 90s, Buffy is wearing white nail polish and hair barettes. Great time for music, not so much with the fashion.

So, yes, I watched many, many things today. On a completely related note, I am about halfway done that cross-stitch pattern I made? :D

Eeeeee so, you guys, I am slow on the uptake on this one, but I have a completely unironic love for the My Little Pony reboot, particularly Pride Pony (dA link), but this makes it better:

And when I say unironic, I mean completely unironic. I don't even like it because I'm nostalgic; I didn't watch the show before, and I didn't collect the dolls. I have a Scottish pony that my friend gave me when we were kids, but that's it. I never even went through that really weird horses-as-a-symbol-of-burgeoning-sexuality phase, either. But, I mean, look at it, it's fucking adorable. It's bright and quick and the ponies are really awesome and spunky and full of personality. It makes me happy when I watch it.

And also I just love mash-ups, you guys. I love them so much. I look forward to the Best of Bootie compilations every year. Give me any mashup, particularly one I can dance to, and we are set.

THIS IS REALLY EXCITING

AND PROBABLY NO ONE CARES

But I have been struggling with eyestrain on my huge LCD monitor ever since I took it out of the box. I have messed with the gamma, the brightness/contrast, jiggled cords, downloaded drivers, prayed to deities, and nothing has worked. Anyone other than black text on white is impossible to read. To add an extra level of difficulty, because I have been working on a lot of art recently it really restricts how far I can wiggle the display settings.

Oh, right, and video and games still play too dark, but that problem isn't fixed yet. c.c;;

ANYWAY, but back to the eyestrain problems, seriously, I have been messing with this for five months.

And today I discovered Clear Type.

Windows has a freaking type setting for LCD monitors.

Oh my god, angels are singing. I can see.

When I was six, I wore glasses for the first time. When I went outside, my voice was full of wonder as I exclaimed: "There's snow on the mountains!" I had never seen the mountains before. THIS IS ALMOST AS GOOD.

I! AM ALIVE. I promise. We're all moved into the new place and it is fabulous, but we have no internet there so I have to cobble together journal entries while at work! We're hoping to get it all hooked up soon. On the plus side, not having any internet at home make it more likely that I'll buckle down and work on art projects!

Or I might play Sims Medieval. You know, it's up in the air right now.

WIP:
- [livejournal.com profile] ladysisyphus's illustration (just started on the flats last night -- home stretch!)
- finish shading for [livejournal.com profile] i_reversebang aftercare pic
- portrait for my amazingly awesome waxer (still gestating in my head)
- help_japan full illustration (waiting for bids to close)
- help_japan character sketch (ditto)

So I think I can churn through my projects pretty quickly. :)

I also found some time last night to whip up a birthday comic for [livejournal.com profile] matchsticks_p, who may be the world's only Derrida fangirl. But, I think, if I put much thought to academic RPF, I would slash him with Edward Said, because Said is my homeboy and they would look good together. Look, that's not as tenuous as some slash pairings, okay.

MORE LIKE WARNING: INCOMING BRRRRRM, AMIRITE?!

Because I couldn't rest until I made an Inception/Reboot crossover, and no one tried to stop me, especially not [livejournal.com profile] butterflythread or [livejournal.com profile] theholysea. So they're partially to blame for this.

Because I am easily amused, and because [livejournal.com profile] butterflythread, [livejournal.com profile] matchsticks_p, and [livejournal.com profile] theholysea, are enablers, I have started drawing an Inception/Reboot crossover. It already has a title and everything. Arthur looks like Megaman, Eames looks like Captain Planet, Ariadne looks like Speed Racer... but somewhere along the line, I learned how to draw faces without photo reference, so that's cool. The lineart is taking a surprisingly long time to finish, despite being in the simple Reboot style.

I also made up a little filk to sing to myself while I was working on the pic, to the tune of Cee-Lo Green's 'Fuck You':

So I'm gettin' kinda bored with the 'verse I love, and I'm like: AU (oo oo ooo);
I guess the crazy dream heist wasn't enough, I'm like: AU, guess I'll read you too.
I said, if Arthur's a pirate, I know I'd still buy it,
(Hah! Is that so wrong? (is that so wrong?))
And I love the dapper gent, but Eames could be a vet,
So I'm like, AU (oo ooo ooooo)

I think there are like a billion verses someone could write for this, so go nuts in the comments if you can think of any. There are as many possibilities as catboy!Arthur has lives, yeah.

This is how I ate my lunch today:

I was all emo because I had leftover steak for lunch, but I didn't have a knife. Then I realized that I carry a knife not for personal defense, but so that I can have a knife in exactly these sort of situations.

Because I am... the most interesting woman in the world.

hitRECord musings

  • Feb. 18th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
neomeruru: (don't give a shit)
So people have been talking about JGL's cover of Midnight Radio. Now, while I'm a big fan of JGL both aesthetically and professionally, and I love that he's so crazily confident so mad props for anything he does, I've been a little ambivalent about his actual singing voice. Imagine my surprise when, halfway through the song, I realized I'd entirely stopped what I was doing and was just listening, tears streaming down my face. So thanks, Joe, I guess I really needed a cry. There was a lot of stress in there.

And yeah, I swear I was thinking about this BEFORE his voice made me cry actual tears (like a crazy!stan, jesus), do you guys think it would be kosher if I submitted my less Inception-y Inception art to hitRECord?

(background for people who don't eat, sleep, breathe art: hitRECord is JGL's collaborative production company project where artists of all kinds submit their drawings, music, movies, spoken word, whatever, and the community 'remixes' it and creates new things, and when an amazing thing arises from the collaborative soup, he uses his media cred to monetize it.)

I mean, here's the thing. You can't submit fanart because you need to 100% own what you create; hitRECord is completely legit and needs to comply with crazy archaic copyright laws and all. But, my stuff's not so amazing that it would be entirely obvious that it's fanart. Like these (BB illos) and this (Triage) and this (Glitch). With, you know, maybe a hair colour change along the way or something.

I want to work on more original art but, so far, my big Renaissance has been for the most part Inception art. And I want to join hitRECord but I don't really have anything to show for myself yet. And also part of me is like, Lindsay, don't be crazy, no one would want to remix your stuff; anime (which you do not draw, but that's what people see) is totally last year and you don't draw nearly enough birds on branches and twee little sparrows.

(can I mention how conflicted I am at the current wave of popular things? Because I love birds on branches and tree silhouettes and darling little hippie patterns, but they ARE SO VERY TWEE right now I can't even stand it, have you been to an IKEA lately. hipster rant over.)

(also, ffs people, I do not draw anime and I will cut you.)

Okay yeah, as well, I owe you guys a post about electrocution and I will do that later, but now I am at work and need to Do All The Things.

Huh, I thought I grew out of my slash-on-sight reflex. Guess I was wrong! Am I the only person in existence who is now slashing Magneto and Xavier? Or have I just joined a secret society of (gag) X-Man slashers?

They are sitting on a crushed red velvet bed together, guys. Even when there's the prospect of a freaky fly-girl strip tease, that's skirting a homo experience. And there are Significant Looks, you guys. With this and The Eagle, I am already seeing this a good year for deviant slash writers.

Also, gratuitous face post, because today I realized that I looked like Justin Bieber before it was cool:

Also, I was telling [livejournal.com profile] photoclerk about my Angry Kirby Face, and she begged for photos, so here! Have my Angry Kirby Face, captured in its glory yesterday morning because I had dreamed that I'd finished a drawing and woke up to find that I hadn't:

These photos also display two of my favorite things in the world: Bear Hat and Monkey Robe. Yes, they get capitals, because they are proper nouns in our household. This morning I caught Husband calling out 'beaaaar haaaaat~' while we were looking for it, like it was a family pet. And Monkey Robe is very dear to me.

I apologize for the double chin and bleary eyes, okay. Both photos were taken at times that seem kind of early in the morning for me. NEVER MIND THAT ONE WAS TAKEN AFTER 11AM, okay, I stay up until 3AM on art nights, give me a break. :D

("Fuck you, I'm naturally adorable!" :D)

AND A BIG HELLO to anyone who is here from the Inception Friending Meme! I hope you like it here. I have an intro post in my journal where you can read all about me. :)

SOME THINGS IN LIST FORM, because it is after midnight and I am kind of all over the place right now:

1. So I have been working on this, like sleeping beauty meets arabian nights picture off and on for like a week now, but it's difficult because I have been so sick and fuzzy, and now I think I am finally in the clear with a scratchy throat and morning death.

behind the curtain: rough colours? i don't know, someone tell me it looks okay )

TEXTURE ABUSE IS LOVE OKAY

2. My computer's background right now is TRON/INCEPTION CROSSOVER PORN, because fandom is fucking amazing. Art comes from the talented [livejournal.com profile] innueneko, the particular piece is posted in this entry. For serious, the downloading bubble made me lol.

3. That leads to the fact that I saw Tron, of course, and it was good. I don't get the people complaining about the story, wtf, it's a Disney movie -- what do you expect, a meditation on the human condition? The acting and script were better than Avatar, the costuming and 'sets' were fantastic and art-inspiring, and can we talk for a moment about Daft Punk scoring the whole thing? And CILLIAN MOTHERFUCKING MURPHY making an UNCREDITED CAMEO, and I would seriously pay again to see that man with facial hair and those adorable hipster glasses, screaming I AM THE VILLIAN IN TRON 3 all over the place.

4. Boss gave me a $75 gift card to Opus, which I'm still kind of reeling from honestly, because in my family we cap presents at $35 and I've known them all my life, not just five months. Anyway, I'm kind of at a loss at what to spend it on, because I know it should be a big thing as I'll never spend $75 in one go again, but I'll spend $25 three times just fine. Looking at a watercolour brush pen, which is like a brush that holds water in a chamber which you can use with watercolour pencils while out sketching. Like watercolours without the mess.

5. Last but not least by any stretch, the latest issue of Shousetsu Bang*Bang is up for those of us needing something to read while fic-writers are going to ground for Christmas and fandom crawls to a halt. Shousetsu Bang*Bang is an original boys-love fiction anthology, and the calibre of writing is very high -- at least one regular contributer is actually a published writer of some renown, using her powers for GAY PORN SHORT STORY rather than for good. My bff [livejournal.com profile] jibrailis has a story in this issue, but my favorite so far has got to be Coming Undone because it has TIME TRAVEL and a narrator who is kind of a dick, all things considered.

Why am I drawn to time travel scenarios? I will only cry myself to sleep at night as I ponder the great vastness of time and the significance of small actions. I weep silent tears of terror that small details may change by way of some callous time traveller's ineptitude. AND YET. I am drawn, like a moth to a flame, by the sirens call of gay porn.

But seriously, if you don't read Shousetsu Bang*Bang, you are missing out on some quality. It's such a very small leap from fandom to original fiction, but the audience drop off is SO VERY steep. This is a project that deserves attention. Personally, I'm making it my goal to start back at the first issue and read every story while on the bus.

Watching White Collar on recommendation by [livejournal.com profile] matchsticks_p. So far, there's been an art dealer named Eames and a namedrop to the Saito hotel (!!!). The main character is a forger with extreme con-man characteristics and a penchant for beautiful suits. The focus of the show is, predictably, white collar crime -- under which would fall extraction.

The more I watch this show, the more I really, really want it to actually coexist with the Inception universe. I feel like I need this like burning.

But seriously, if you have not watched White Collar, g-g-go download it YESTERDAY. If only for Matt Bomer.

And the writing, of course. Each episode leaves me breathless with glee at the intelligent, quick, dry banter (see also: kryptonite, and the acting just brings in these little quirks and microexpressions that seriously have me rewatching sections constantly and wondering why I can never be this cool.

Husband picked me up from the train yesterday, nearly giddy because he'd gotten his hands on the new Linkin Park CD.

Now, I've never really liked Linkin Park. Chester's voice annoys the hell out of me, even when the rest of the song sounds great. Even so, I've been flirting with the singles from their latest CD, A Thousand Suns. This CD, though, has captivated me.

It's like this CD takes everything I thought about Linkin Park and turns it over on its head. The songs are musically very tight and well-crafted, Mike Shinoda's lyrical stylings are a little more on the forefront, and Chester seems to have taken an actual goddamn singing class somewhere because, hot damn, that boy can make noise. Except for one song, he doesn't do that stupid growling noise when he sings anymore.

The album feels much more mature and worldly than their previous sound. Mike goes a little rasta at some point, and Chester not only opens those vocal cords to sing (sing! with lyrics!) but his spoken word feels a little more calypso. The sounds are also different, in When They Come for Me they bring in the quintessential drumline you see more often in bhangra music:

Seeing how I have ALWAYS been a sucker for that drum beat, it only makes me want to draw. Now, what to draw, though? Original characters sexy!dancing, or fall back on Eames/Arthur escape heist?

we'll give that puzzle what-for!
